The Penguin algorithm was originally launched by on the 24th of April, 2012 and the purpose of penguin is to penalize any sites that are spamming Google’s search results with low quality, unnatural looking links. Although we don’t exactly know what factors the penguin algorithm looks at, we do know that Google is trying to expose low quality, self-made links (PBN’s). This means that if the Google Penguin algorithm figures out that a considerable number of backlinks to your site are low quality, then this will reduce the trust of your whole site and decrease in rankings. There are also other factors that play a role in the Penguin update but links are by far the most essential thing to consider

If you can get a backlink from a well-respected site on the web, then this is a type of endorsement for your site but on the other hand, if a small unknown site with no authority, links to you then this vote is not going to count for as much. However, if your site can get a substantial number of these small endorsements, they this method can really make a difference, especially in low competitive industries.
How to know if you’ve been hit by Penguin?
One of the easiest ways to find out if you’ve been hit by the Penguin algorithm is your web traffic. Log in to your Google analytics and at look at your traffic round about the time of the release and if you have noticed a dramatic change, then maybe it was because of the google penguin update. The second thing that you can do is check your Google rankings. There is a lot of different SEO tools you can use to monitor your Google rankings but if you don’t want to pay, simply Google the different keywords your site was ranking for and see if your rankings have dropped.
How can you recover from a google penguin hit?
In order to recover from a Penguin penalty, you immediately have to disavow all spammy, unnatural links pointing to your site by logging in to Google webmaster tools. Then, after you have disavowed all the spammy links then, the next time that Penguin algorithm updates, you will slowly regain trust in Google’s eyes. In some cases, it can take a couple of refreshes in order for a site to completely escape Penguin.
